Standard Issue (above shown) General Service army rank chevrons. These are produced from a worsted rank lace stitched to a wool cloth backing. In issue since WW1.

Tropical Rank Chevrons (Sgt - as shown left).

These are the same as above however the wool backing is replaced with a khaki drill backing. These were used in tropical regions for the KD uniform as the drill was more functional than the wool cloth and possibly more readily obtainable.

It would seem likely that these had been produced out of practicality rather than as a result of official request. The KD uniform needed to be laundered more frequently than the wool battledress. As such the backing to the chevrons needed to be harder wearing.
